INSIGHT: Unable to Run Insight Application After Network Changes

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

IFAS Insight is unable to connect the the IFAS host after network changes were made at the local site.

CAUSE

There may be several possible causes for this problem. Use the following troubleshooting steps to identify the issue:

  1. Determine the IP address for your PC. On the Start menu, click on Run. Enter command and click OK.
  2. When the command window opens continue with the approprite steps for your operating system.

    Windows 9x - Type the command winipcfg and press the Enter key.
    Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 - Type the command ipconfig /all and press the Enter key.

  3. Verify that a valid IP address is listed for your site. If you are unsure if the address displayed is valid, contact your local administrator. If the IP address listed is 0.0.0.0 or Cable Disconnected is displayed then the address is invalid. Contact your local administrator to resolve the problem.
  4. From the command window type the following command and press the Enter key: ping 10.0.1.2

    If the following message is displayed then your PC has not been properly configured for your network.

  5. C:\>ping 10.0.1.2

    Pinging 10.0.1.2 with 32 bytes of data:

    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics for 10.0.1.2:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

    Your PC has been properly configured if the follwing message is displayed:

    C:\>ping 10.0.1.2

    Pinging 10.0.1.2 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 10.0.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=254
    Reply from 10.0.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=254
    Reply from 10.0.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=254
    Reply from 10.0.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=254

    Ping statistics for 10.0.1.2:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

  6. Ping the IFAS host using the Fully Qualified Name. From the command window type the following command and press the Enter key: ping odin.shastalink.k12.ca.us If the following error is displayed then your DNS setting(s) may be incorrect. Contact your local administrator to determine the correct settings for your site. Similar results to those shown in step 4 will be displayed if the test is successful.
  7. C:\>ping odin.shastalink.k12.ca.us
    Ping request could not find host odin.shastalink.k12.ca.us. Please check the name and try again.

  8. Delete the temporary file containing your connection information and reboot your PC. This file may be marked as hidden. To view all files open My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. Click on the View tab and choose Show Hidden File and Folders.

    Windows 9x - C:\Windows\temp\BTInsightShm.mem
    Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 - C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\temp\BTInsightShm.mem

  9. Turn off socket mode communications in the Insight application. This option will simplify communications with the IFAS host but may cause unexpected behavior or loss of functionality.

    Hold down the Shift key. On the Edit menu, click Options. Uncheck Socket Communication Mode on the General tab.

  10. Reboot your PC.
